The Heirloom Care Kit: Cutting Board Oil, Wood Butter & Applicator

Everything a good board needs to last a lifetime, in one box.

A wood board is built to outlive the kitchen it lands in. What decides whether it does is simple care: a deep oiling when the wood is thirsty, a sealing coat of wax once a month, and the right tools to do both in a couple of minutes. Most people never get around to it because they don't have what they need on hand.

The Heirloom Care Kit fixes that. It is the same two-step system we use in our Oregon shop, boxed and ready the day the board arrives.

What's Inside

• Board Oil, 8 oz. Food-grade mineral oil for the deep soak. Use it on a new board, a dry board, or one coming out of storage.
• Wood Butter, 8 oz tin. Our small-batch blend of mineral oil and beeswax, hand-poured in Oregon. It seals in what the oil puts in.
• Shop-made applicator. A block cut from our own walnut and maple offcuts and faced with wool felt, so the oil goes on evenly and your hands stay clean.
• Cotton buffing cloth. For wiping off the extra and bringing up the sheen.
• Care card. The whole routine on one card, with a QR code to our full care guide.

The Routine

1. Oil. Flood the board with Board Oil, let it soak in overnight, and wipe off what is left.
2. Seal. Work in a thin coat of Wood Butter with the applicator and let it sit 15 to 20 minutes.
3. Buff. Polish with the cloth. After that, a coat of Wood Butter once a month keeps it there.

Anyone who just bought a board, received one as a gift, or owns a good board that has started to look dry. It is also the easy answer for the cook who already has everything. Most people own a board worth keeping. Almost nobody owns the kit to keep it.

FAQ

Is everything food-safe?
Yes. The oil and the Wood Butter are made only from food-grade ingredients.

Does it work on end grain?
Yes. End grain drinks more, so give it two rounds of oil the first time.

How long will it last?
The oil covers several deep soaks, and one tin of Wood Butter covers well over a year of monthly care for a board or two.
