Nobody comments on a coaster. They just pick it up, turn it over, and put their glass back down on it.
That is the whole opportunity. A coaster is the one object at a dinner party that every single person touches.
What you get
- Four or six slate coasters, 4 inches square, with naturally irregular edges
- Your name, initial, or monogram engraved into the stone in the style you choose
- Cork feet on the bottom so they will not scratch a table
- Packed together and ready to give
Why slate
Slate engraves the opposite way wood does. On wood the laser darkens the surface. On slate it removes a whisper of the face and what is left underneath is a pale, chalky white against near black. The contrast is sharper than anything I can get out of hardwood, and it does not fade, chip off, or wash away, because nothing was added to the stone in the first place.
It also does not care about a wet glass, a hot mug, or a red wine ring. Stone is stone.
The three styles
Serif. A family name in clean, straight letterforms. Readable across a room and it will not look dated in ten years.
Script. Warmer, with the character built into the letters. This is the one most people pick for a wedding or a housewarming.
Ornate monogram. A single framed initial cut from the family name. The most compact of the three and the one that reads as the most finished on a small square.
These are the same three styles offered on our personalized cutting boards, so a set of coasters and a board can be engraved to match.
Being straight with you about what these are
I do not quarry stone. Every cutting board on this site is milled, glued, and flattened by my hands in Albany, Oregon, and these coasters are not that. They are slate blanks I select and engrave here in the same shop, on the same machine, in the same three styles.
I would rather you hear that from me than work it out later. What you are buying is the engraving and the matching, and both of those are mine.
How to look after them
Wipe them with a damp cloth. That is genuinely all. Do not put them in the dishwasher, because the heat and the detergent will dull the surface over time and there is no reason to risk it when a cloth takes five seconds.
The engraving will not come off. It is the stone itself.
Questions
Do all the coasters get the same engraving?
Yes. One design across the set, so they read as a matched group. If you want them each different, that is a custom shop order.
Will they scratch my table?
No. Each one has cork feet on the bottom, so the stone never touches the surface.
Can I get more than six?
Yes. If you need a dozen or more, or you want them for an event or a client gift, start at bulk and gifting and the pricing works differently at volume.
Can you match these to a board I already bought?
Yes, if it came from me. Tell me the order number in the notes and I will match the style and the wording.
Will they arrive in one piece?
Slate is stone, so it can chip if you drop it on tile. They ship packed for it. If one arrives damaged, send me a photo and I will replace it.
Are the edges sharp?
No. The edges are naturally irregular, which is how slate breaks, and that is part of the look. They are not cut edges and they are not sharp.
